Washington, D.C.President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not seek reelection this year.

Rather, he has thrown his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris in her contest against Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.

The announcement is anticipated to halt any discussions about an open convention at the Democratic nominating convention next month.

Biden announced in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that he will not accept the nomination and will focus on his duties as President for the remainder of his term.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,”

Reflecting on his decision from the 2020 election, Biden added, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made.

Harris, who has served as Vice President since January 2021, has been a prominent figure in the administration and is seen as a strong contender to lead the party against Trump.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

This endorsement comes at a critical time as the Democratic Party prepares for its nominating convention.

Biden’s decision to step aside and support Harris is likely to streamline the party’s efforts to mount a cohesive and focused campaign against the Republicans in the upcoming election.

In his announcement, Biden emphasized the importance of unity within the party and expressed confidence in Harris’s ability to lead. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this,” he urged.

As the political landscape shifts, all eyes will be on Kamala Harris as she steps into the spotlight as the Democratic Party’s potential nominee.
