Human right lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju has made a strong case for eliminating salaries for political office holders in Nigeria, arguing that the country cannot afford such expenses.
Adeyanju’s comments were made during his appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, where he criticized the current political system and the financial burden it places on the nation.
Adeyanju criticized the current political climate, stating, “No politician should be paid salary in Nigeria because we are a poor country. Politics is about service; even the president should drive his personal car. We shouldn’t be buying official vehicles for government people.”
The activist highlighted the excessive spending on political office holders, pointing out that politicians in Nigeria treat their roles as full-time jobs. “Not only are we paying them, but they also have 10-20 aides. Principal officers in the National Assembly alone have over 2000 aides. You can go and fact-check,” he said.
Adeyanju called for a shift in mindset, using the example of the Kenyan president. “If they tell the president of Kenya that he would beg, would he ever agree? He was begging because citizens said politicians were wasting money. We need a similar thing from our government,” he added
