Arsenal legend Paul Merson criticizes Chelsea’s decision to extend Cole Palmer’s contract, questioning his ability to meet the expectations entrusted to him.

On Tuesday, Palmer secured a two-year extension with Chelsea, committing him to the club until June 2033.

The deal, which extends Palmer’s stay at Stamford Bridge by nine years, has raised eyebrows among some football pundits, including Merson, who believes the move might be premature.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson acknowledged Palmer’s impressive performances last season but voiced doubts about the winger’s ability to replicate his form in the upcoming season.

“He’s had an unbelievable season, and he is a good player, but this season every [opposition] team talk is going to be ‘Stop Cole Palmer playing’.

He’s got that now the whole time. And now you are giving him a nine-year contract? I am not sure [he will score 15 goals],” Merson remarked.

Merson drew parallels to former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who signed a new contract after a stellar season but struggled to maintain his form under increased scrutiny.

“We’ve seen it a million times, like with [Emmanuel] Adebayor.

He ripped it up at Arsenal [in the 2007-08 season], got a new contract, and was marked. It’s going to be hard. If he gets 15 goals next season, I will be like, ‘Wow, fair play to you’. Fifteen is a lot of goals.”
