The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), is going to face a disciplinary committee amid alleged anti-party activities.
Deputy national publicity secretary of the party, Ibrahim Abdullahi spoke on Monday when he featured on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.
The leadership of the PDP, back in August, instituted a disciplinary committee to address the misconduct and indiscipline within the party and to ensure that there’s accountability, fairness, and upholding ethics and values.
This committee is chaired by Tom Ikimi, a former minister of foreign affairs.
Abdullahi stated that Wike is one of the members of the party that will be summoned by the disciplinary committee.
“Three weeks ago, we put up two committees in place, that of reconciliation and disciplinary, and Nyesom Wike is one of the persons to face the disciplinary committee, which is headed by elder statesman chief Tom Ikimi,” he said.
“The disciplinary committee will look into issues of anti-party activities. We have been receiving petitions regarding anti-party activities or sabotaging the party throughout the primary, leading to where we are now.
“These petitions against Wike and other party members have been aggregated and sent to the committee.“
Abdullahi also reacted to a recent remark by the former governor on the political crisis in Rivers state.
Wike, whilst speaking at the PDP state congress in Rivers on Saturday, cautioned governors in the party against interfering in the affairs of the opposition party in Rivers state.
The FCT minister and Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, have been locked in a political battle over the control of the political institutions in the state since 2023.
The brawl between both politicians has divided the Rivers house of assembly —with each group electing a speaker loyal to the governor and his predecessor, Wike.
Abdullahi described Wike’s comment as “disappointing”, saying he ought to have “managed his words carefully”.
“That was a very disappointing remark. We weren’t expecting him to say that, and to be honest with you, we are not with him on that,” he said.
The party has been enduring an internal crisis since 2022 —before the presidential election.
Albeit he’s a member of the PDP, Wike received an appointment as minister in the administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.
The call by a number of stakeholders for the suspension of the former Rivers governor over alleged anti-party activities has further polarized the party.
