On August 26th, Mr. Kelechi Isaac, a young businessman, set out on a journey from Ughelli, Delta State, to Owerri, Imo State, accompanied by two friends. Their journey took a distressing turn at a police checkpoint in Odi, Bayelsa State, where they encountered a group of officers who would subject them to a harrowing ordeal.

Initially, the police conducted a search of Isaac and his companions but found nothing incriminating. However, the situation escalated when the officers demanded Isaac’s phone. Citing a directive from the Inspector General of Police that prohibits such actions, Isaac refused to comply. This refusal led to him being brutally beaten and falsely accused of being a terrorist.

Under significant duress, Isaac eventually surrendered his phone. The officers accessed his bank details, discovering a balance of N10.7 million. Seizing the opportunity, they accused him of illicit activities, labeling him a “bad boy.” The intimidation and violence continued until Isaac felt compelled to transfer N3 million to the officers to secure his release.

Once safely in Owerri, Isaac, who is also known for his activism, decided to take action against the injustice he faced. He reported the incident, prompting Assistant Inspector General Paul Alifa Omata to order a thorough investigation. This investigation led to the arrest of three officers involved in the incident, and Isaac’s stolen money was recovered.

Despite the recovery of his funds, Isaac is determined to pursue justice to prevent similar abuses in the future. His case has sparked a wider conversation about police misconduct in Nigeria, encouraging other victims of extortion and abuse to come forward. Reports have surfaced about routine extortion by police officers, not just on highways but also in the streets of Yenagoa, underscoring a pervasive issue within the Nigerian police force. This incident highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to address the corruption and criminal behavior that tarnish the reputation of law enforcement in the country.
