Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi Central has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the political crisis quaking Rivers State, labelling it a threat to national security and stability.

She made this comment on Tuesday through her Chief Press Secretary, Arogbonlo Israel, also implored the FCT Minister and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, to give room for his successor, Governor Sim Fubara, to govern the state as mandated by the constitution.

Wike and Fubara have been at loggerheads over the control of politics and government institutions in Rivers, a development which instigated political crisis in the state.

The crisis has brought about the killings of innocent citizens, burning down of government institutions, defection of some politicians in the state from one political party to another and ultimately, the breakdown of law and order.

Nonetheless, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stressed the need for presidential intervention to protect citizens’ lives and property, ensure neutrality of state institutions to facilitate peace and justice and to also prevent further degeneration of the crisis.

She said, “The situation in Rivers demands urgent attention, and I implore Mr President to take decisive action to prevent further escalation. We cannot afford to watch as the crisis deepens, threatening the stability of the region. President Tinubu’s leadership is crucial in resolving this impasse.

“If left unchecked, the crisis may undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress, embolden perpetrators of violence and electoral malpractices, and threaten national security and stability.”
