Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has urged forward Christopher Nkunku to remain at Stamford Bridge, suggesting it would be “mad” for the Frenchman to leave, especially with Manchester United reportedly interested in signing him.

Nkunku, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023, has had a challenging start to his career at the Premier League club. The 26-year-old struggled with injuries last season, making only 11 league appearances due to fitness issues.

However, this season, he has shown signs of promise, netting 10 goals in 16 games under manager Enzo Maresca.

Despite his impressive performances, Nkunku has often found himself in a supporting role, playing second fiddle to Chelsea’s attacking options, including Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, and Cole Palmer.

This has led to speculation linking him with a move away from Chelsea, with Manchester United and other clubs reportedly keeping tabs on the forward.

But Johnson believes Nkunku should focus on finding his rhythm at Chelsea, stressing that leaving now would be premature.

“His start to life at the club was quite tough when he suffered his injury, and we don’t know if he is fully over that yet,” Johnson told Betfred.

“In spells, we have seen some really good stuff from him, and as Chelsea are going in the right direction, he would be mad to jump ship now.”

Johnson emphasized that Chelsea are on the up, and if Nkunku can stay fit and earn a place in the starting XI, he could have a significant impact.

“They are in a much better position now, and if he can get fit and get himself in the starting eleven, then Chelsea have a good player on their hands,” he added. “He just doesn’t look fully fit yet.
