Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has stated that telecommunications tariffs in Nigeria will be reviewed periodically to reflect economic realities.
Speaking at the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 23, Edun emphasized the need for a balance between cost adjustments and service improvements in the telecom sector.
His statement follows the recent approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for telecom operators to implement a 50 percent tariff hike, which has sparked criticism, particularly from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The NLC described the decision as a “clear assault” on workers’ welfare and warned of a potential nationwide boycott of telecom services.
Edun acknowledged the economic pressures facing the telecom industry, citing inflation and rising operational costs as key factors necessitating the tariff review.
He, however, urged telecom companies to enhance service delivery to justify the price adjustments.
“There has been inflation and rising costs, and that has to be reflected for the telcos. At the same time, we want them to operate efficiently, provide seamless call termination, and deliver high-quality services,” Edun said.
He assured that the government would continue to engage stakeholders to ensure that future tariff reviews are fair and beneficial to both consumers and service providers.
