Rep. Andy Ogles Proposes Amendment to Allow Trump to Serve a Third Term

Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican congressman from Tennessee, has proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow former President Donald Trump to serve a third term in office.

The move comes as part of Ogles’ belief that the country needs “bold leadership” to navigate its current challenges.

On Thursday, January 23, Ogles introduced the proposed amendment, which seeks to amend the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The current provision limits presidents to two terms in office. Ogles’ proposal would change that, stating, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

Ogles argues that Trump’s leadership is essential to reversing the nation’s recent struggles, including economic decline and political instability.

“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles stated in a press release.

“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

Currently, under the 22nd Amendment, Trump is barred from running for a third term, a limitation that Ogles seeks to remove with his proposal.

While Trump has not publicly pursued a third term, he raised the possibility in a lighthearted remark made to House GOP lawmakers.

During a meeting, Trump joked, “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something,” hinting that the Republican Party could find a way to extend his presidency.

Despite the joke, which was met with laughter from House Republicans, Ogles’ proposal reignites the debate about Trump’s continued influence in U.S. politics.

In the wake of his recent return to office after the 2024 election, Ogles praised the series of executive orders Trump has signed, particularly those addressing issues like border security, energy production, and withdrawal from the World Health Organization.

“In just a few short days, President Trump has already taken action to undo the catastrophic policies of the Biden Administration and put the United States back on the path to strength and prosperity,” Ogles remarked.
