Former Nigerian lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has warned that if US President Donald Trump moves forward with plans to station troops in Greenland, the global community could condemn such actions.

Sani, however, emphasized that no nation would likely intervene militarily to stop the US, suggesting that even countries like France would not take action against such a move.

The remarks come on the heels of recent conversations between President Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who confirmed that Greenland, an autonomous part of Denmark, is not for sale.

Despite the clear stance from Frederiksen, Trump has expressed an ongoing interest in the Arctic island, citing national security concerns.

Speculation about Trump’s intentions to acquire Greenland had already surfaced during his first term, and the issue resurfaced after the US leader began his second term.

Reports have indicated that Trump has considered acquiring not just Greenland, but also the Panama Canal and even parts of Canada.

Many European officials have viewed Trump’s comments as a potential negotiation tactic to gain leverage in the Arctic region, especially given the increasing presence of Russia and China in the area.

However, Sani’s assessment reflects a growing concern that global diplomacy may be shifting back to a world where military power overshadows international law and moral considerations.

“If Trump decides to move US troops to take over and occupy Greenland, there will be condemnation, but no nation will send its forces to confront or liberate Greenland,” Sani noted.

“There will be no sanctions. The world is sadly returning to the power of might over right.”

While the White House has yet to officially comment on Trump’s plans, the global community remains watchful of the developments surrounding Greenland and its geopolitical importance.
