Political commentator Reno Omokri has come to the defense of the Kano State Government, which has allocated a substantial sum to organize mass weddings in the state.

Omokri, while discussing the issue, argued that there should be no judgment regarding the state’s decision to spend N2.5 billion on mass weddings after investing N25 billion in education.

Omokri pointed out that the young brides involved in the mass weddings were not underage, stating that his own investigation confirmed this.

He emphasized that, based on cultural norms in Kano, legal nuptials before intercourse are preferred, distinguishing the practice from what he described as “fornication” in other cultures.

He further mentioned that arranged marriages, such as those seen in the mass weddings, are often successful, drawing on the example of such unions around the world.

In his defense of the budget allocation, Omokri highlighted that Kano has been making significant strides in education, with the state reportedly building schools faster than any other state in the southern part of Nigeria, excluding those in the southwest.

“If they decide to spend N2.5 billion on mass weddings after spending N25 billion on education in 2024 alone, menene matsalar (what’s the matter)? To each their own. There should be no judgment,” Omokri said, urging for understanding of the state’s priorities and decisions.
