The Ekiti State Government has dismissed reports alleging the imposition of multiple taxes or the introduction of new levies, urging the public to disregard such claims.
Speaking during a meeting with the Management of the State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS), led by its Chairman, Mr. Olaniran Olatona, the State Commissioner for Information, Rt.
Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, clarified that the recent increase in revenue generation was due to the government’s efforts in blocking financial loopholes and leveraging technology for tax collection.
He emphasized that the funds generated are being utilized transparently for the state’s development.
Olatunbosun described reports of a protest against taxation policies as “misguided,” reaffirming the government’s commitment to a fair and progressive tax system.
He explained that Ekiti’s tax framework is designed to be transparent and neutral, ensuring that residents contribute equitably to economic growth.
Addressing concerns about the Best of Judgment (BOJ) tax assessment method, the Commissioner noted that it is a globally accepted practice applied only when taxpayers fail to submit accurate and complete financial records as required by law.
He urged taxpayers with concerns to seek clarification at EKIRS offices and utilize dispute resolution mechanisms to avoid misunderstandings.
In his remarks, EKIRS Chairman Mr. Olaniran Olatona reiterated the agency’s dedication to equity, accountability, and sustainable economic development through a fair tax system.
He assured taxpayers that anyone who disagrees with a BOJ assessment has the right to object and provide financial records for reassessment.
“We run an open-door policy, and my office is always open to attend to complaints and inquiries. Our officials will remain humane but firm in ensuring compliance, while we continue to educate the public on the importance of taxation for the state’s development,” Olatona stated.
The government called on residents to engage constructively with tax authorities and contribute responsibly to Ekiti’s economic progress.
