At least 10 students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, are receiving medical treatment after inhaling a yet-to-be-identified poisonous gas on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

Eyewitnesses reported that the affected students, all from the Science Laboratory and Technology Department, were in their lecture hall after a course test when a fight broke out between two students.

Amid the chaos, an unknown choking substance was allegedly released into the air, causing several students to collapse, with some losing consciousness.

Upon receiving a distress call, the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, led an emergency response team to the scene.

The affected students were swiftly evacuated to Ring Road State Hospital and the University College Hospital, where they were stabilised and are currently receiving medical care.

Dr. Ajetunmobi assured the public that the students were in a stable condition and receiving proper medical attention.

She called on the institution’s management to conduct a thorough investigation to identify and punish those responsible for the incident.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to ensuring the well-being of all Oyo State residents and will continue to respond promptly to health-related emergencies,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr. Taiwo, commended the state government for its quick intervention and vowed to take decisive action against those involved in the incident.
