Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has officially confirmed that Filip Jorgensen has replaced Robert Sanchez as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The decision marks a significant shift in Chelsea’s goalkeeping hierarchy as Maresca seeks to stabilize the team’s form in the Premier League.
Sanchez, 27, has faced criticism for his performances, with costly errors contributing to Chelsea’s struggles, including a crucial mistake in their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City last month.
In response, Maresca handed Jorgensen, a Denmark U21 international, a starting role in Chelsea’s 2-1 league win over West Ham.
However, Sanchez was reinstated for the FA Cup loss to Brighton, raising questions about the goalkeeping situation.
Addressing the media ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming league clash against Brighton on February 14, Maresca clarified that Jorgensen, 22, will now be the club’s primary goalkeeper.
He explained that the decision allows Sanchez time to recover both mentally and physically, but ruled out frequent goalkeeper rotations moving forward.
Despite Chelsea’s inconsistent form since December, Maresca remains confident in the team’s progress.
He emphasized their competitive standing in both the Premier League and the Conference League, describing their season so far as “fantastic.”
With Chelsea pushing for a return to the Champions League after missing out in the past two seasons, Maresca is determined to secure a top-four finish.
