Shehu Sani Urges Diplomatic Approach in Canada-Nigeria Visa Dispute

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has described Canada as one of the friendliest nations to Nigeria, despite the ongoing visa controversy involving Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa.

Sani, in a post on X, acknowledged the longstanding cordial relationship between both countries and called for a responsible and diplomatic resolution to the issue.

He described the decision of the Canadian Embassy to deny Musa an entry visa as unfortunate but emphasized that it should not overshadow the positive ties between the two nations.

“To be fair, Canada has always been one of the friendliest countries to Nigeria. The country has accommodated thousands of Nigerians and given them a second chance to build their lives, educate their children, and support their families back home,” Sani wrote.

He further stressed the importance of Nigeria’s military leadership, stating, “Our military and service chiefs are doing a good job in defending our country from terrorists. This isolated incident should be handled responsibly and diplomatically so that it doesn’t go beyond this level.”

The controversy began when General Musa disclosed that he was unable to attend a veterans’ event in Canada due to a visa denial by the Canadian embassy.

The situation has sparked reactions from various quarters, including the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who expressed strong disapproval of the decision.

Tunji-Ojo described Canada’s action as “disrespectful” to Nigeria, emphasizing that such treatment towards the nation’s top military officer was unacceptable.
