Renowned rapper and business mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has accused attorney Tony Buzbee of attempting to extort him through what he describes as false and damaging allegations.
According to newly filed court documents obtained by TMZ, Jay-Z claims that Buzbee sent two demand letters in November 2024, seeking settlements for separate accusations—one of which was dismissed, while the other never reached court.
One allegation was from a Jane Doe, who accused Jay-Z and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual misconduct dating back to 2000 when she was 13.
The second involved a John Doe, who alleged that Jay-Z assaulted him at a Beverly Hills party in 2015 after he was unknowingly drugged.
Jay-Z has denied both claims, calling them “completely false and absurd in every respect.” His legal team argues that Buzbee’s actions constitute blackmail, stating that the lawyer sought a settlement to “resolve” the situation.
The rapper further alleges that the timing of the Jane Doe lawsuit was strategic, as it was filed on the eve of his daughter Blue Ivy’s Hollywood premiere for Mufasa: The Lion King.
He suggests this was an attempt to pressure him into either addressing the claims or avoiding public scrutiny. Despite the legal challenges, Jay-Z attended the premiere alongside his wife, Beyoncé, and their daughter.
Jay-Z had previously filed a lawsuit against Buzbee under an anonymous identity in November, alleging extortion. He later revealed himself as the plaintiff, with Buzbee subsequently attempting to have the case dismissed.
Now, Jay-Z is pushing to keep his lawsuit against Buzbee active, stating that the attorney’s actions pose “an existential threat to my reputation, my career, my family, and everything I have worked for.”
While the Jane Doe lawsuit has been voluntarily dismissed, Buzbee remains firm in his position, telling TMZ, “We expect that lawsuit, which is frivolous, to be dismissed.”
