Osun APC Opts Out of LG Polls, Declares Exercise Superfluous

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has officially withdrawn from the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for February 22, 2025.

The decision was communicated in a letter addressed to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) and signed by the party’s secretary, Alao Olabisi Kamoru.

The APC cited a recent ruling by the Appeal Court in Akure as the primary reason for its withdrawal, arguing that the judgment rendered the elections unnecessary and unlawful.

According to the party, the ruling—delivered under Appeal No. CA/AK/270/2022—reinstated previously elected local government officials, thereby eliminating any vacancy in the local councils.

The party further referenced an earlier judgment by the Federal High Court, identified as Suit No. FHC/OS/CS/94/2022, which had initially nullified the tenure of the reinstated officials.

However, with the Federal High Court’s decision overturned on February 10, 2025, the APC maintained that there was no legal basis for conducting new elections.

Despite having campaigned extensively across Osun State’s 30 local government areas, the APC described the election as “unnecessary, superfluous, and unlawful,” leading to its decision to withdraw from the race.

With this development, the Osun political landscape is set for further debate, as stakeholders await the next move from OSSIEC and other political parties involved in the election.
