A former spokesman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mr. Chuks Ibegbu, has described former President Ibrahim Babangida’s recent admission that Moshood Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election as an important and timely acknowledgment of history.
In press release in Umuahia, Ibegbu stated that Babangida’s confession was long overdue and urged him to provide further insight into other major events that took place during his administration.
“It is important that Babangida has finally spoken on the June 12 election. However, Nigerians are still waiting to hear the full truth about other unresolved issues from his era, such as the Hercules Air crash, the case of Gloria Okonkwo, and the assassination of Dele Giwa,” Ibegbu said.
The former Ohanaeze spokesman also challenged both past and present Nigerian leaders to emulate Babangida by coming forward with confessions about actions that negatively impacted the country.
He particularly called for disclosures on the Nigerian Civil War, coups and counter-coups, and other policies or decisions that led to loss of lives and national crises.
Ibegbu further urged civilian and military leaders to be transparent about how Nigeria’s resources were managed during their time in office.
“Nigerians deserve to know the truth about how our wealth was utilized or mismanaged. These revelations are crucial for permanent national reconciliation and healing,” he asserted.
