A 27-year-old pastor was bitten by a Black Mamba while praying near a river in Hazelmere, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning, February 22, 2025.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:41 AM when a concerned member of the public contacted the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre, requesting urgent medical assistance for the victim.
RUSA paramedics swiftly arrived at the scene, locating the pastor behind the Hazelmere Dam wall. He recounted that he had been deep in prayer by the river when a large black snake bit him on the left foot.
The man firmly believed it was a Black Mamba, one of Africa’s most venomous snakes.
Paramedics observed symptoms of neurotoxic poisoning, including extensive swelling at the bite site.
Despite his condition, the pastor managed to walk a few meters from the river, seeking help from security officers who promptly alerted emergency responders.
The victim received immediate symptomatic treatment before being rushed to a medical facility for further care.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution in snake-prone areas, especially during outdoor activities.
