“Divorce No Be Child’s Play” – Nigerian Lawyer Warns About High Costs and Complex Process

Nigerian lawyer has shed light on the often-overlooked realities of divorce in Nigeria, warning that the process is not only expensive but also emotionally and legally draining.
In a viral social media post, the lawyer cautioned that individuals seeking to end their marriage should be financially and mentally prepared.
“Divorce is expensive. For a start, your lawyer will collect at least ₦100,000 to ₦150,000. That’s just the beginning of the cinema,” the lawyer stated.
However, they went on to explain that the total cost could rise significantly, depending on the attorney hired, with some cases costing between ₦500,000 to ₦1 million
Beyond lawyer fees, divorcing couples must go through counseling sessions, as courts often encourage reconciliation before finalizing a separation. This process, aimed at helping couples find a way to settle their differences, can add to both the financial and emotional toll of divorce.
Additionally, the court system itself may not make the process easy. The lawyer noted that delays and bureaucratic hurdles are common, with some cases dragging on for two to four years if not properly handled.
