Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, is set to make a dramatic return to his position, following a resolution by top All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.
Obasa, who was impeached on January 13, 2025, has had his security details restored, while those of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, his successor, have been withdrawn.
Meranda, who was Obasa’s deputy before his removal, made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
However, despite not officially resigning, her fate appears to have been decided over the weekend during a high-level APC meeting.
The closed-door meeting had in attendance former National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande; former Governor of Osun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba; former Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Muiz Banire; members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC); and some lawmakers.
The gathering sought to resolve the leadership crisis within the Assembly.
According to sources familiar with the meeting, party leaders concluded that Obasa’s impeachment was illegal, and the lawmakers were directed to reinstate him.
“The resolution reached at the meeting was that Obasa’s removal did not follow due process, and the lawmakers were told to return him to office,” a source disclosed.
While there is no official confirmation on when the House will reconvene, indications suggest that a session could be scheduled soon to effect the leadership change.
Meranda had indefinitely adjourned plenary two weeks ago following chaos in the Assembly, after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the chamber.
