Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has weighed in on the sexual harassment allegation against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, urging due process and transparency in handling the matter.
The allegation was made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. The controversy began on February 20, 2025, when Akpoti-Uduaghan had a heated exchange with Akpabio during a Senate session after discovering that her seat had been changed without her consent.
The situation escalated, leading the Senate to vote to refer her case to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for review.
However, in a recent interview with Arise Television, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio had previously sexually harassed her, claiming that their disagreement stemmed from her rejection of his advances.
Saraki Calls for Transparent Investigation
Reacting in a statement on Saturday, Saraki stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the Senate while ensuring a fair and unbiased resolution of the dispute.
“It is a development that has made me sad because of its overall negative effect on the integrity, sanctity, image, and public perception of the institution,” Saraki said.
He emphasized that the Senate must not be seen as an institution that tolerates misconduct, including sexual harassment, abuse of office, or disregard for parliamentary rules.
Saraki called for a full investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, urging both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan to cooperate fully.
“At this point, with the public claims made by the Senator, the right measure to take is to institute an open, transparent, and honest investigation. Both parties must submit to the process and stake their claims before the committee,” he stated.
He recalled a similar situation during his tenure as Senate President when he voluntarily appeared before the Ethics Committee to clear his name over allegations of importing an official car without paying customs duty.
According to him, allowing an open and fair process helped maintain the credibility of the Senate.
Saraki insisted that his stance was not about siding with either party but ensuring that the Senate remained an institution of integrity.
“I am neither stating that Akpabio is guilty of anything nor am I expressing the opinion that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is right in her actions and claims. My position is that an investigation is needed to find out the truth and protect the integrity of the Senate,” he clarified.
He urged all stakeholders to avoid actions that could damage public confidence in the legislative arm of government.
“No leader or member should be allowed to openly or surreptitiously work to subvert the Senate’s sanctity,” Saraki concluded.
The call for an investigation adds to the growing debate on the issue, with political observers closely watching how the Senate leadership will handle the allegations in the coming days.
