Mojisola Meranda has officially stepped down as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, citing the need to uphold the integrity of the legislative institution amid leadership disputes.
In her resignation speech delivered on Monday, Meranda explained that her decision was a sacrifice to resolve the crisis threatening the unity of the Assembly.
Meranda, who assumed office on January 13, 2025, faced internal disagreements that reportedly disrupted the House’s operations. In her speech, she reaffirmed her commitment to serving her constituency, Apapa Constituency 1, and the people of Lagos State.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective today, March 3, 2025. My decision is based on my firm belief that the democracy of this House must be protected,” she stated.
She emphasized that her resignation was not an act of quitting but a necessary step to prevent further conflicts within the legislature.
“As leaders, we must not allow our differences to weaken the institution we have built. I appreciate the solidarity and support from my colleagues, management, and staff of the House of Assembly,” Meranda added.
