Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed grave concern over the recent surge in kidnappings involving the use of boats and demands for ransoms in foreign currency.
Obi warned that these developments have severe socio-economic implications for the country.
In a post on his X handle on Sunday, Obi lamented the ongoing insecurity that continues to destabilize Nigeria, citing the recent kidnapping of Mohamed Fouani, the Managing Director of Fouani Company, and three other Lebanese nationals in Lagos as a prime example of the escalating crisis.
“Insecurity has continued to rage through the country, causing severe economic instability and threatening our national existence,” Obi stated.
He described the use of boats for kidnappings and the demand for ransoms in foreign currency as a “new and more ugly dimension” to Nigeria’s security challenges.
Obi also condemned a recent attack on Dudun Doki village in Gwadabawa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where gunmen killed over ten people and abducted many others.
He called for urgent action to end these terror attacks and the resulting loss of lives.
“We must strive to put an end to these terror attacks and the attendant loss of lives,” Obi urged.
“I continue to urge that more concerted efforts be made to safely rescue Mr. Fouani and other many abductees from the hands of their captors.”
The former Anambra State Governor called on the government and security agencies to implement more stringent measures against the rising tide of insecurity.
“I encourage the government and the security agencies to employ more stringent measures against insecurity in our country. May Almighty Allah accept our prayers for our nation on this day, show us mercy, and intervene in our situation,” Obi concluded
