Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the Nigerian government’s handling of the security situation in the country, describing the recent terrorist attacks in Borno and Plateau States as evidence of a complete breakdown in governance and protection of citizens.

In a strongly worded statement released via his official X account on Tuesday, Atiku expressed outrage over the fresh wave of violence in Northern Nigeria, referencing the killings in Borno State as well as the recent massacre in Plateau’s Bassa Local Government Area, where at least 47 people were reportedly killed.

“I am deeply saddened and alarmed by the resurgence of violent attacks in Plateau State, particularly the recent killings in Zike community in the Kimakpa area of Kwali district,” he stated.

“This tragedy, coming just days after a similar attack in Bokkos LGA, is a grim reminder of the worsening state of security in our country.”

Atiku also cited the concerns raised by Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, who both recently decried the increasing loss of lives and territorial control to insurgents in the region.

Condemning what he called the incompetence of the current administration, Atiku said, “It is regrettable and entirely unacceptable that these Nigerians had to lose their lives as a result of the incompetence of the Tinubu-led administration. The protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of any government. Unfortunately, President Tinubu has failed these citizens and continues to fail them.”

The former Vice President further accused the federal government of allowing impunity to thrive, noting the lack of swift prosecution for known terrorists and bandits.

“Every sincere Nigerian should be disturbed by how terrorists and bandits operate with impunity, especially in Northern Nigeria, which has become the epicentre of this violence,” he added.
