Aliko Dangote, Africa’s foremost industrialist and Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, has formally announced his retirement from the board, drawing the curtain on a remarkable 20-year tenure at the helm of the company.

The announcement was contained in an official statement issued by the Company Secretary, Temitope Hassan, on Wednesday. According to the release, Dangote’s retirement will take effect from June 16, 2025.

Under his leadership since 2005, Dangote Sugar transformed into one of Nigeria’s leading sugar manufacturing firms, driving key expansion initiatives and embedding robust governance structures within the organization.

“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON, effective June 16, 2025,” the statement read.

Dangote’s era was marked by ambitious backward integration projects across Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States — strategic efforts aimed at improving local sugar production and curbing Nigeria’s reliance on sugar imports.

In the same breath, the company disclosed that Arnold Ekpe, an Independent Non-Executive Director and seasoned banking executive, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Board.

“Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe, Independent Non-Executive Director, as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, effective 16th June 2025,” the statement continued.

Ekpe, a former Group CEO of Ecobank, is expected to bring a wealth of experience and insight into the company’s strategic direction moving forward.

The board, while expressing confidence in Ekpe’s leadership, paid tribute to Dangote’s legacy of dedication and transformative impact.

“We express our deep appreciation to Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his years of exemplary service and unwavering commitment to excellence,” the company concluded.
