Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has shared candid advice with young Nigerian activists on how to handle encounters with security operatives, drawing from his decades of personal experience.

In a note addressed to “Aluta comrades of today,” the former lawmaker warned against rushing to honour police invitations, stressing the importance of strategy and preparation.

“When they invite you for Friday, delay the invitation till Monday. Bail dey hard to get for Friday,” Sani wrote.

He cautioned that anyone going to make a statement should never go alone, urging them to be accompanied by a lawyer

He also advised carrying essentials such as a toothbrush, soap, Vaseline, towel, and extra clothing in case of an overnight detention.

According to him, if the phone number of the officer who recorded a statement becomes unreachable, “you go pass the night inside cell be that.”

Sani further explained that an early morning pickup after a night in custody usually signals a search operation.

He added that excessive friendliness from officers often foreshadows a court appearance and possible prison time.

“This is from my decades of personal experience. My free advice for young Aluta comrades of today. Next time I’ll give you more hint on handcuffs and prison life,” he concluded.
