Governor Seyi Makinde has said the choice of who will succeed him in 2027 rests squarely in the hands of the people of Oyo State — not on political godfathers or campaign sloganeering.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ consultative and engagement meeting on the 2026 budget held in Ibadan, the state capital, on Thursday, the governor asserted that Oyo residents have grown beyond “stunt politics” and will demand accountability from anyone seeking to govern them.
“The decision on who would be the next governor rests with the people of Oyo State. We will make our own submission to the people, because Oyo State has gone beyond stunt politics,” Makinde said.
He stressed that citizens will now interrogate candidates’ plans and performance rather than being swayed by political catchphrases.
“Maybe it used to happen in the past. Now, Oyo State people will ask you questions,” he added.
The governor also took a swipe at the Federal Government, accusing it of attempting to “demonise governors” by claiming states have more money than they admit.
Makinde said his administration remains focused on creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, adding that true progress depends on empowering the people economically.
“What we have tried to do in Oyo State is to ensure that the government provides an environment where businesses can thrive,” he noted.
