Nollywood actor Chinedu Ikedieze, popularly known as Aki, has urged Nigerians to give mental health the attention it deserves, stressing that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health.
In an exclusive interview with PUNCH Online, Ikedieze said mental health struggles affect everyone, whether due to personal battles or environmental pressures. “It takes a lot to be a man. Your level of discipline and self-control determines how you react to life’s challenges. Speaking out to the right bodies can ease the pressure,” he said.
The actor recently attended a mental health conference in Namibia organised by Echoes Africa Initiatives, a New York-based charity. He described the experience as eye-opening, highlighting the importance of emotional discipline and self-awareness in coping with life’s pressures.
“The awareness has really made me understand the aspects of life we often neglect. Listening to victims and experts share their experiences showed practical ways to address mental health challenges,” Ikedieze added.
He encouraged Nigerians to engage openly in conversations about mental health, suggesting workshops, movies, and other platforms to reach a wider audience. “Feed your mind with positivity. And please, do whatever makes you happy. Life has no duplicate!”
The call comes amid rising concerns in Nigeria over increasing cases of depression, anxiety, and suicide, particularly among youths and public figures. Experts warn that poor awareness and limited access to care remain major obstacles.
Ikedieze joins other celebrities, like singer Iyanya, who have spoken about their struggles, reminding the public that fame does not shield anyone from emotional challenges.
