APC Was Formed by Political Losers — Lamido Alleges

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a political platform founded on anger, malice, and bitterness, with no serious ideological foundation.

Lamido made the remarks in his newly released autobiography “Being True To Myself”, specifically in Chapter 16, page 421, which was unveiled to the public on May 13, 2025.

In the book, the former governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recounts pivotal moments in Nigeria’s recent political history and offers candid reflections on the evolution of party politics.

According to Lamido, the APC’s formation was reactionary, stemming from frustrations among opposition politicians rather than a genuine desire for national development.

“I once had cause to explain to some members of the public after the APC was formed, that it was created out of anger, malice and hatred. It was not and has never been a serious political party,” he wrote.

He further described its promoters as “parochial scavengers” who viewed politics as a business venture rather than a vehicle for service.

Recalling the political landscape of 1999, Lamido noted that Nigeria had three dominant parties—PDP, the Alliance for Democracy (AD), and the All Peoples Party (APP).

He explained that after the PDP’s victory in that year’s general elections, subsequent mergers and reconfigurations among opposition elements eventually birthed the APC.

“The AD/APP alliance later dissolved into the ANPP, but they lost the elections; it was these losers that later came together to establish the APC,” he stated.

“What the APC did was to turn history upside down and promote a so-called ‘Mr. Integrity’ and hoodwink Nigerians with false tags.”

Lamido also recounted being approached multiple times by APC promoters during the internal crisis that rocked the PDP prior to the 2015 general elections.

However, he said he rejected their overtures, choosing instead to stay loyal to the PDP.

“To me, the honourable thing to do was to remain in the PDP and be part of the solution to the party’s problems,” he added.
