Tinubu Names Tegbe to Lead Tax Reform Committee

FATI SALAM

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially appointed Joseph Tegbe to chair the newly formed National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC), a key body tasked with rolling out the government’s ambitious new tax reforms. The move is being seen as a major step in strengthening Nigeria’s tax framework and boosting revenue collection.

Tegbe is no stranger to the world of finance and taxation. With over 35 years of experience spanning public and private sectors, including leadership roles at KPMG Africa, he brings a wealth of knowledge and practical insight to the table. He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), credentials that underscore his professional credibility.

The NTPIC will operate under the oversight of Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun. Its responsibilities are wide-ranging: coordinating across key government agencies, consulting with public and private stakeholders, harmonising regulations, and conducting nationwide awareness campaigns on the new tax laws. The committee is expected to ensure that implementation is smooth, transparent, and inclusive, bringing reforms directly to the citizens and businesses that will be affected.

While Tegbe has the experience to deliver on this challenging mandate, the broader question remains: will personal interests or political pressures overshadow his work? History shows that even the best-laid tax reforms can stall when vested interests creep in. The success of this committee will depend on whether Tegbe and his team can navigate these pressures and keep the focus on effective, results-driven implementation.

If done right, Nigeria could finally see a more efficient, fair, and transparent tax system that strengthens revenue collection and promotes economic growth. If not, it risks being another reform that exists only on paper, with minimal impact on everyday citizens.

As the committee begins its work, all eyes will be on Tegbe — not just for his expertise, but for his ability to stay committed to the larger goal of genuine tax reform, putting national interest above personal or political gain. The coming months will be a true test of leadership, accountability, and the government’s resolve to transform Nigeria’s tax landscape.
