Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and Convener of the National Peace Committee, Bishop Matthew Kukah, says it is incorrect to claim that Nigerian Christians are facing genocide.
Speaking in an interview reported by Vanguard on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Kukah explained that the term “genocide” is widely misunderstood and misused in public debates.
He noted that genocide is not defined by the number of deaths but by the intention behind the killings.
According to him, even if 10 million people are killed, it does not qualify as genocide unless the attackers’ goal is to wipe out a specific group.
“Genocide is not based on the number of people killed. You can kill 10 million people and it still won’t amount to genocide. The critical determinant is intent — whether the aim is to eliminate a group of people,” he said.
Kukah emphasized that identifying genocide requires proof of deliberate attempts to destroy a community because of its identity or faith.
